Venturing for Vittles

Crew 128 sends a BIG THANK YOU to everybody who helped make Venturing for Vittles a big success!

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the National Capital Area Council cancelled its November Scouting for Food event. Shortly after it cancelled that event, it allowed individual units with an approved safety plan to operate their own food drives. With permission obtained, Crew 128 encouraged members of St. Johns Episcopal Church and Scouts in its chartered units (Pack 665, Girl Troop 128, Boy Troop 128, and Venture Crew 128) Scouts to seek and safely collect food donations from their neighbors and friends.

On December 13, Crew 128 operated the central collection point for the Scouts, congregants, and community to deliver their donations. We used a “no-contact” method by operating two drive-through lanes in St. Johns parking lot. Even with minimal staffing, masks, and social distancing, the results were outstanding:

  • Measured by weight, the Crew received over a ton of food and related supplies! To be exact, 2,096.5 lbs., which we can safely round to 2,100 lbs.

  • Measured by volume, delivering the bounty required an eight-foot trailer, one SUV, one van, and one pick-up truck!

After discarding expired food, and sorting the rest for storage, we delivered it all to SHARE of McLean.

This success could not have been achieved without the efforts and generosity of many participants in our community. Our crew, therefore, repeats its BIG THANK YOU to everyone involved.
